Spanish Lesson - Word of the Day: Rincón

Rincón (reen'-CONE) noun - a corner or nook.

One of the true pleasures in Mijas is wandering the streets of this Andalusian Pueblo Blanco. Whitewashed homes are accented by flowers, windows covered by decorative rejas (RAY-haas). Neighbors may be out sweeping in front of their homes, or visiting with passing friends.

As you take your evening stroll, or paseo (pah-SAY-oh), you may come upon a small plaza where neighbors gather and meet. The rincón (reen-CONE) is a comfortable corner, or nook. In the summer, you may find refuge from the sun under the shade of some trees or the shadow cast by a wall. In cooler weather, you may find a rincón where sun rays gather to provide a comforting warmth. Find a spot on a bench and watch the local children playing football (soccer for our American friends), with each child pretending to the their favorite player from clubs in Barcelona, Madrid, the local club in Málaga, or the Spanish National Team.

This is life in Spain - slower, more relaxed, and full of simple pleasures. Find a rincón, relax, and enjoy your time in Mijas!
