Passing Time in Mijas

Where does the time go? Days and weeks seem to pass in a flash when we’re in Mijas. We try to squeeze as much into each day as possible, and continually look forward to what the next day has to offer.

Our typical day in Mijas la Nueva starts with a friendly game of tennis on the community court. We have reached a point where we don’t keep score while playing tennis (Yohanna will tell you that’s because she beats me quite easily……I choose to believe it’s because we just playing for fun!). The reward for a game well played? A leisurely breakfast on the patio.

It seems there’s a festival or event going on regardless of the season. Summer brings a whole host of events with activities held in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña each Tuesday and Thursday night during July and August. During June, the Juegos Populares features foam jet cannons that bathe everyone from children to adults in a sea of soapy bubbles.

Hiking is very popular, and there are well marked trails through the mountains surrounding Mijas. Maps are available at the Tourist Information office across from the Plaza Virgen de la Peña. Our favorite hike is less rustic, but a great workout with rewarding views. When you’re in Mijas, you’ll see a tall mountain with radio transmission towers at the peak. There is a service road at the bottom where you can park your car while you hike to the top on the paved access road. Depending in where you park, the inclining hike is between 4.5 to 5 km to the top. Along the way, you’ll get different perspectives of Mijas Pueblo, the coast, Benalmadena, and Málaga. On clear days, you’ll be able to see Gibraltar, the coast of Morocco in Africa, and the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountains behind Granada.

Mijas la Nueva has two community pools. The larger of the two pools is near The Carob Bar and the community tennis court. The pool was recently renovated and is nicely maintained. Lounge chairs are available for use - just bring your towels!

Attempting to squeeze a lot into a day doesn’t always mean physical exertion. Sometimes it’s good to just find a spot to read, relax, and contemplate life. There’s always a view that let’s your imagination wander.

There always seems to be a Feria happening somewhere - perhaps in Mijas Pueblo, Mijas las Lagunas, Mijas la Cala, or in neighboring villages. Pageants, food, fun, carnival rides, and entertainment go from the evening until well into the night. We were thrilled to find Carlos Baute performing at the Feria de Las Lagunas in 2017 - Yohanna is a huge fan!

In July and August, you’ll find a great way to experience the diversity of food on offer in Mijas and get to know the village a little better is to grab your Tapaporte (your Tapas passport) from the Tourist Information office. Local establishments partner with the tourism efforts to offer a tapas and drink. Visit and get your Tapaporte stamped. Once you’ve collected them all, you can return your Tapaporte to the Tourist Information office and receive a gift commemorating your gastronomic travels!

These are some of our favorite activities and events in the Mijas la Neuva urbanization and Mijas Pueblo. For a list of current events, look for the free Mijas Semenal (Mijas Weekly) newspaper available in many shops, the Tourist Information office, and the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall). If you’re unable to get a copy, or you’re not in Mijas, you can always find the latest edition plus the most recent few weeks online here. The paper publishes in both English and Spanish. Here’s a tip: if you’re tempted to look just for the English listing of events (What’s On), you really shouldn’t overlook the Spanish version (both in the same printing). The Spanish version includes more events and activities, and includes those additional items that will really give you a sense of life in Mijas.
